Feeling stuck over your current design situation? Follow our advice to bounce back from your design rut and find your new motivation.

1. Simplify

The internet has caused design to be much more accessible than ever before. The 24/7 access to information can be overwhelming.

We are bombarded with beautiful images in every design style that would all look great in our homes. Though completely inspiring, its also completely crippling!

For us, the easiest way to overcome this information overload is to simplify. Focus on just one thing and do it well. You will find that even the slightest change will feel like a huge accomplishment.

Look at your inspirational images and strip it down to the barest element that you like best. It could be as simple as a furniture arrangement that you love or a paint color combination that you simply adore. Doing this allows you to focus on the key aspects that make you happy, without trying to recreate the entire room

2. Change It Up

Sometimes you need to get out of your head and just get started. We know, we know…the simple act of starting can seem completely daunting. What if you mess up? What if you purchase something and hate it, or find out that it no longer works once the room is complete? You know what…it doesn’t matter! Keep in mind that nothing is permanent. If you no longer like your purchase return it, or maybe it works great in another room.

Even a minor change can make a big impact. Change out the accent pillows on your couch for a quick room refresh. Restyle your coffee table for a classy updated look. Tired of looking at the same window curtains? Change them out for a quick new perspective. These seemingly minor changes can have a big design impact. It will also help to invigorate your mindset and help you get ready to take on a bigger project.

3. Get Organized

It’s easy for your mind to get cluttered if your surroundings are cluttered. Take a moment to organize your space and purge you room of the non essentials.

4. Change Your Scenery

Sometimes we are unmotivated simply because we visit the same places over and over again. This isn’t very inspiring! While you may not have the time or budget to travel to an exotic locale, you can change where you shop.

Venture out from your favorite home decor store and try something different. If you are making a donation run to deposit your old decor items, stop by  their affiliated retail store if available. Vintage pieces can bring fun and character into your space in a way you never imagined.

If you typically gravitate to mid century modern pieces, try shopping at art deco or contemporary home decor stores. If you love bohemian inspired pieces, try coastal inspired elements. Shopping at stores that differ from your typical design style will help inspire your design choices. Remember design doesn’t exist in a vacuum. There are a numerous styles and elements ready to inspire you.

5. Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day no one knows your design style better than you. Let your subconscious be your guide. Allow yourself to be open to new discoveries and experiences.

Don’t limit yourself by price. Find the things you love, even if outside your budget, and then figure out how to achieve a similar version and a price point that works for you.

Give yourself time to explore new ideas. With constantly updated news feeds and quick moving schedules it can feel like a race. Respect the mental season that you are in now and trust that it will pass. Give yourself the time you need to bounce back and let the ideas flow. When you are ready the ideas will come and it will be well worth the wait!
