Black Friday: Black and Charcoal Decor

The number one shopping day of the year is here, Black Friday! In honor of Black Friday we are celebrating black and charcoal decor. Black is a bold, deep and dramatic color choice. Charcoal is a friendlier alternative that has many different undertones that can work to enhance many design palettes.

Black and Gold

Gold is having a moment right now. We saw it in many showrooms at High Point Market ( see our  High Point Market Recap https://dayziner.com/highpoint-market-recap/) Pairing Gold accents with Black instantly adds luxury and sophistication to your space. The contrast also adds a definite focal point to the room. In this image the eye is instantly drawn to the black and gold chairs and the fume hood. Think about the areas you want to focus on and the areas that you will spend the largest portion of your budget. These areas are the ones to receive the bold accent choices, and black is certainly bold!

Black, White and Rustic

Another way to successfully use black is to incorporate all its shades into one room scene. This starts to layer the room. Depending on room size, the strongest black can be a used as accent furniture, a decorative object or a focal wall. Remember that as a color, black saturates so it will absorb all the light around its immediate surroundings and take over. Take a look a the black accent pillow and throw on the accent chair. They almost start to disappear when paired against the black background.

When working with black, It’s important to think about the exposure to natural light and the amount of available light in the room. In certain cases a low light level is ideal and can be relaxing while setting an overall mood. In other cases, such as in production room, it is best to maximize light levels and keep the amount of darker colors to a minimal.

Black as a Graphic

A bold geometric pattern can be intensified when set to black. When working with bold graphic walls, remember less can be more. Place your pattern on one wall and have the adjacent wall painted a solid color. Also keep the rest of the design simple. Let the walls do the work. We also love the idea of a bold wall covering in small spaces such a a bathroom or powder room. What is especially successful about this image is that there is no base cabinet under the sink. This is a bit atypical for a bathroom as the average homeowner prefers to have storage space. But from a design point of view, a geometric wall pattern is pair with  minimal geometric sink. It’s balanced design poetry.
